logo science week "APPLES AND HOPS"

A display at Wotton Heritage Centre - February to April 2006 (including the British Association's Science Week in March)

This display takes a look at Wotton's inns and off-licences, past and present, and the breweries associated with them. Several were coaching inns - on routes to Gloucester, London and Bristol - and others important stopping places for carriers. Of at least forty known inns in the 19th century only five continue to serve the community at the present time.

A number of inns had their own breweries or cider houses. Gradually, however, "common" brewers took over. In their turn they were swallowed up by large national breweries. Happily several small and highly individual breweries exist in the area making use of modern day technology.

The display is illustrated with photographs and information on former inns, and reminders of the advertisements which inn keepers and brewers used to extol their services. Related artefacts will also be on show.

Perhaps a sub-title might be "Trouble brewing?"
