Old Frampton Court: A Commonwealth House

Rose Hewlett will tell the story of 'old' Frampton Court, Frampton on Severn, described as 'a defenceable house' when it was garrisoned by Parliamentary troops defending supply lines against the Royalists at Berkeley Castle during the siege of Gloucester in 1643. Seven years later it was bought by Captain John Clifford from a cousin and he repaired and rebuilt the house during the early 1650s to create a comfortable and welcoming family home which formed the centrepiece of his newly acquired estate.

An attorney by trade, Captain John was meticulous in his record-keeping. Using contemporary paintings, accounts books covering both the period of rebuilding and the 1670s, an inventory compiled by Captain John and many of his working papers, Rose will give an insight into what the house was like and how it was furnished.
