A discourse on the art of Chirurgery and Barber-surgeons in Gloucestershire. (This talk is part of Wotton-under-Edge Arts Festival)

My well beloved Friends, Greetings.

My name is John Deighton, barber-surgeon of the fair city of Gloucester. I shall with pleasure discuss with you medical theory and the art of diagnosing illness, using the latest skills such as uroscopy and astrology.

I can also introduce a range of treatments and medicines – many local to our beloved county of Gloucester. I have many such cures from snail-water to salves although perhaps an acquaintance you know requires a tonic or purging?

In addition I can perform a good number of surgical procedures should you require them! Do any of you charges need to be treated for the tooth-worm? Should you be bled? If so can offer leeches or fleams. Perhaps it is a cure for a paine in the head that you seek?

Should you ever be in need, I also practice battlefield surgery and can treate wounds caused by both arrow and shot, as well as sword and pike.

Lastly, I can also offer you a shave…..
