29/04/2016
Our speaker, Dr Nick Humphris, has been a volunteer site guide at Chedworth Roman Villa for 3 years and has been an outreach speaker for 2 years
Chedworth Roman Villa was home to some of the richest people in the country during its heyday in the 4th century and is one of Britain’s grandest Romano-British villas. It nestles in a wooded coombe in the heart of the Cotswolds and is managed by the National Trust.
The talk will include:
- the pre-Roman history of the site; relevant Roman history;
- the Villa’s initial establishment in the 2nd Century and its development through the 3rd Century to the magnificent 4th Century villa.
- its demise at the end of the Roman era and its discovery in the 19th Century.
- contemporary Roman hospitality;
- the Villa’s fine mosaics;
- current archaeology and future plans.
