Witer Sophie Gaudier Brzeska Centenary Display

To mark the centenary of the death of writer Sophie Gaudier Brzeska in 1925, the Heritage Centre has assembled a display. It tells her story and how she travelled from Poland to Germany, France, United States and London where she lived with sculptor Henry Gaudier Brzeska from 1910 to 1914. Henri was killed in WW1 France and Sophie moved to Wotton-under-Edge in 1916.

In 1922 she was arrested and taken to Colney Hill Mental asylum where she passed away in 1925.

Her writings and Henri's sculptures were collected by the late Jim Ede of Kettles Yard in Cambridge. Our thanks to Ania Ready and Dr Patricia Gilles for their assistance in assembling Sophies story.
